What is Claude Code?#
Claude Code is an AI tool from Anthropic that works as your digital assistant. It reads documents, writes email drafts, prepares reports, automates repetitive tasks and understands the context of your work. Unlike simple chatbots, Claude Code actually works with your files, applications and workflows.
The key question for small business owners is not "what can it do," but "how much does it cost and does it pay back." In this article I answer both - with real numbers.
All Claude Code plans and prices (April 2026)#
Anthropic offers several plans. Here they all are, from the cheapest to the most expensive:

EUR prices are approximate, converted at a rate of ~0.95 EUR/$. Anthropic bills in USD.
Which plan does most small businesses need?
Pro plan to start. At 19 EUR a month you get everything you need to try it out - Claude Code, projects, Google Workspace integration. That is the cost of one lunch for two.
Max 5x for regular use. If you use Claude Code for several hours a day - for emails, documents, reports - the Max plan gives you 5x the capacity. At 95 EUR a month it is still less than one hour of expert consulting.
Team Premium for teams. If you have 5 or more employees who would use Claude Code, Team Premium at 95 EUR per person makes sense. It includes administration, shared projects and centralised management.
Comparison with the competition#
Claude Code is not the only tool on the market. How does it compare?

The key difference: GitHub Copilot and Cursor are aimed at developers - they help with writing programming code. Claude Code, on the other hand, is not only for developers. It understands your text, documents and business processes. For a small business owner who is not a programmer, Claude Code is more useful than Copilot or Cursor.
ChatGPT Plus is comparable on price, but Claude Code has a better grasp of long documents and complex instructions - which is critical for business processes.

ROI calculation: when Claude Code pays back#
Numbers speak more clearly than promises. Let's look at three realistic scenarios.
Scenario 1: Email automation (Pro plan)
Situation: A business owner receives 15-20 emails a day. For each email they spend 5-10 minutes reading, thinking and writing a reply.
Without Claude Code:
- 15 emails x 8 minutes = 2 hours a day
- 2 hours x 22 working days = 44 hours a month
- If your hour is worth 25 EUR = 1,100 EUR of monthly time
With Claude Code (Pro plan):
- Claude Code reads the email, prepares a draft reply
- You review and send - 2 minutes per email
- 15 emails x 2 minutes = 30 minutes a day
- Saving: 1.5 hours a day = 33 hours a month
Calculation:
- Cost: 19 EUR/month
- Time saving: 33 hours x 25 EUR = 825 EUR
- ROI: 4,242 %
- Payback time: less than 1 day
Scenario 2: Client onboarding (Max 5x plan)
Situation: A services business onboards 4 new clients a month. Each onboarding takes 3 days (questionnaires, documents, setup, communication).
Without Claude Code:
- 4 clients x 3 days = 12 working days a month
- 12 days x 8 hours x 25 EUR = 2,400 EUR
With Claude Code:
- Automated questionnaires, document drafts, setup
- 4 clients x 3 hours = 12 hours a month
- Saving: 84 hours a month
Calculation:
- Cost: 95 EUR/month
- Saving: 84 hours x 25 EUR = 2,100 EUR
- ROI: 2,110 %
- Payback time: less than 2 days
Scenario 3: Weekly reports and analytics (Pro plan)
Situation: An operations manager prepares a weekly report for management. They gather data from several sources, prepare summaries and visualisations.
Without Claude Code:
- 4 hours a week to gather, analyse and write
- 16 hours a month x 30 EUR = 480 EUR
With Claude Code:
- Claude Code gathers data, prepares a draft of the report
- You review, adjust, send
- 1 hour a week instead of 4
Calculation:
- Cost: 19 EUR/month
- Saving: 12 hours x 30 EUR = 360 EUR
- ROI: 1,795 %
- Payback time: 2 days

In all three cases the investment pays back within the first 2 days of use. The remaining days in the month are pure saving.
Hidden costs (that nobody talks about)#
Let's be honest - Claude Code is not just 19 EUR a month and everything works. Here are the costs you need to take into account:
1. Time for setup
Count on 4-8 hours for the initial setup. That includes:
- Understanding your processes
- Writing rules and instructions for Claude Code
- Testing and adjustments
- Learning the basics of how to use it
If you do this yourself, that is your time. If you hire a specialist (as we are), that is an additional cost - but the setup is done faster and more correctly.
2. Learning curve
For the first 2-3 weeks you will be slower, not faster. That is normal. You need to learn how to use Claude Code - how to give it instructions, how to check results, when to use it and when not.
After 2-3 weeks the use becomes natural and the savings start to add up.
3. Ongoing maintenance
30-60 minutes a month for adjustments. Your processes change, new clients have different needs, occasionally you need to fix instructions. It is not much, but it is not nothing.
4. When the plan is not enough
If you are on the Pro plan and use Claude Code 6-8 hours a day, you will probably hit the limit. The upgrade to Max 5x (95 EUR) or Max 20x (190 EUR) is the next step. Factor that into your calculation.
When Claude Code is NOT worth it#
To be fair - Claude Code is not for everyone. Here are situations where it probably will not pay back:

You have fewer than 5 repetitive tasks a week. If you spend most of your time on unique tasks that require your expert judgement from start to finish, Claude Code will not save you enough time.

Your work is purely physical. Builders, mechanics, cooks - if your work does not involve writing, reading or processing documents, Claude Code has nowhere to help.

You do not want to change your processes. Automation requires adjustment. If you want to do everything exactly as you do now, only faster, Claude Code is probably not the right solution.

You have a very small volume. If you send 3 emails a day and have 1 client a month, 19 EUR is a low cost, but the saving will be minimal.
How to start without risk#
Step 1: Try it for free
Claude.ai has a free plan. It is limited, but enough for a trial - send it an email and see how it handles it. If you see potential, continue.
Step 2: Start with the Pro plan
19 EUR a month, no lock-in. Pick one repetitive task - for example writing email replies - and automate it. Measure the time for 2 weeks.
Step 3: Calculate your ROI
After 2 weeks you have enough data. How many hours have you saved? How much is your hour worth? If the saving is greater than 19 EUR (which it almost certainly is), continue. If not, cancel without consequences.

Frequently asked questions#
Is Claude Code free?
Claude.ai has a free plan with limited usage. Claude Code (the terminal/desktop tool) requires at least the Pro plan at 19 EUR a month. For regular business use we recommend the Pro or Max 5x plan.
What if I do not use the full capacity?
You pay a fixed monthly amount, not by usage. If you use it less one month, you still pay the same. But at 19 EUR the risk is low - even one working day saved a month more than covers the cost.
Do I need technical knowledge?
No. You set Claude Code up in natural language - you tell it what you want and it carries it out. Programming is not required.
Are prices in EUR or USD?
Anthropic bills in USD. The EUR prices we quote are approximate - the actual amount depends on the exchange rate and your payment provider.
What if I need more than the Max 20x plan?
For very intensive use (multiple users, high volume) API usage or the Enterprise plan makes sense. The API is billed by consumption - Claude Sonnet costs roughly 3 USD per million input tokens. For most small businesses the Max plan is more than enough.
How does Claude Code compare to ChatGPT?
Both are comparable on price (~19 EUR/month for the basic plan). Claude Code has the edge in handling long documents and complex instructions. ChatGPT has the edge in a wider ecosystem of plugins. For business processes we recommend Claude Code.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. All plans have no lock-in - you cancel whenever you want, with no penalty. If it does not pay back, you simply cancel.

Claude Code costs between 19 and 190 EUR a month. For most small businesses the Pro plan (19 EUR) is enough to start, Max 5x (95 EUR) for regular use.
For a typical small business the investment pays back within the first 2 days of use. The remaining days in the month are pure savings of time and money.
The numbers are clear. The question is not whether you can afford Claude Code. The question is whether you can afford not to use it.
